Playing with tyvek

Since I saw those videos on YouTube, I wanted to play with tyvek:

I started to search for tyvek in German patchwork shops and what I found were few different types of tyvek: so called fabric-tyvek in different weights and paper tyvek (white and silver; now, white one is not available anymore). As there were no good photos of fabric tyvek and it was cheaper, I got two kinds of it - thicker and thinner, just to try.
How dissapointed I was when the package arrived. The tyvek didn't look at all like the one on the YT videos. It was looking more like a soft, perforated vinyl tablecloth:

Zaczelam wiec poszukiwania tyveku w niemieckich sklepach patchworkowych.

It also didn't behave like the one on the videos after heating it. It didn't want to burn through nicely and when I tried, I got something reselmbling burned plastic instead of bubbles and holes. And the thinner version was even worse than the thicker one.
After few tries, I decided to give the paper tyvek in silver a go (as the white was not available anymore). I should do it from the very beginning, as that was the right choice :) It's something between the paper and aluminum foil. The bubbles are created easily and it also burns through in between:

No wiec obrusowi bylo daleko do moich oczekiwac. Kasa poszla w tzw. bloto...
Nic to, czlowiek uczy sie n bledach. Babelki tworza sie bez problemu, pomiedzy sie przepala, no cud, miod i orzeszki:

And why tyvek at all? For few elements for the next quilt. I needed to make a bird's skull (vulture's skull, to be precise). I wanted it to be different from the rest of the quilt top. To have a different structure and look very old, destroyed and sun-bleached. I just thought, that tyvek would be great for this purpose.

What I did was to sew two layers of tyvek onto a piece of stabiliser and free-motion-quilted the outlines of the skull (unfortunatelly no photos from this stage). Then I cut some holes in tyvek and the rest of the job did the iron (I did burn too much in some places, but it's difficult to perfectly control the process). After heating tyvek, I painted the skull with acrylic paints:

A czemu w ogole naszlo mnie na tyvek? Potrzebna mi czaszka sepa do nastepnego quiltu. Chcialam, zeby wyrozniala sie od reszty quiltu. Zeby miala inna strukture.
Naszylam dwie warstwy tyveku na stabilizator do haftu, przeszylam kontury czaszki (stopka do pikowania), wycielam wieksze dziury w tyveku, a reszte przepalilam zelazkiem.

I also tries the same with the other tyvek (the perforated white one). Just as a sort of experiment. The results were far from the ones I expected. I got kinda sad dinoraus skull:

Zeby nie bylo, z 'obrusowym' tyvekiem tez sprobowalam. Niestety, zamiast sepa, wyszlo mi cos na podobe czaszki bardzo smutnego i chudego dinozaura...

And just for comparison:

A to dla porownania:

It's easy to see on this one, how this 'fabric' tyvek doesn't want to burn through, but instead it looks like melted plastic:

Tu dobrze widac, jak sie 'materialowy' tyvek topi (robi sie taki mleczny, przezroczysty i strasznie twardy), zamiast przepalac:

But I encourage you to try tyvek some day. It's fun and gives tons of possibilities!

Zachecam do zabawy z tyvekiem. Naprawde.

New quilt - here I come...

I'm not starting working on a new pictorial quilt yet, but I have almost everything I need to do so. Have to still finish one more thing and order fabric medium and then I'm ready.

I have all fabrics, paints and threads. I bought some pretty batiks (you can clearly recognise the colour combo of the next quilt):

I got also some thread from Madeira (the only company around here from which you can get all kinds of metallic thread) and new needles:

Nici metaliczne Madeiry tez juz czekaja.

And amazing metallic paints and pigments from Jaquard. Those were pretty hard to get. There are only 2 shops in Germany selling those paints and in the time I was searching they didn't have all the colours available (and, honestly, the paints are pricey). On Jaquard's website I found other shops in Europe and one shop in Czech Republic - Silktrade - had all the colours available and almost half cheaper than in Germany :) The owner - Pavel - is super nice, shipping was very quilck and if you are searching for some Jaquard paints or pigments in Europe, I can recommend the shop with all my heart (no, I wasn't paid for the advertisement ;) I'm just one happy customer and maybe this information will help someone):

A ten zakup mnie chyba najbardziej cieszy. Przez strone producenta poszukalam innych sklepow w Europie i znalazlam jeden w Czechach - Silktrade - ktory mial w ofercie wszystkie kolory (no i cena byla prawie o polowe nizsza niz w Niemczech).

So you can see, the next quilt will be shiny, there will be a lot of painting and embroidery. Or at least such is the plan. Fingers crossed that it works!
And being silent (on the blog) doesn't mean I'm not doping anything. I will be. And I will do a lot. I might just not have time to share my progress untill I'm finished. I hope you will stay with me during those busy days (busy days should last till end of June; after wedding it will be easier and I will have more time to sew).

Z poczatkiem lipca wszystko powinno wrocic do normy.

'She's a Wildflower' - quilted and ready for binding

I spent the whole day yestarday on quilting the background (plus several days before on quilting the girl and the flowers). Now it's just binding and the sleeve on the back and I can start working on another one :)
I enjoyed working on this quilt a lot, although I had to fight with my sewing machine a bit while quilting all the layers of applique:

Techniques, fabrics & threads:
- painting on fabric (or better to say painting on applique) - face and hair
- raw edge applique - everything
- face and shoulder is Kona cotton, hair and background are Stonehenge fabrics
- flowers are cut out from numerous flower fabrics.
- qulting face, hair and flowers - invisible thread Madeira Monofil No. 60
- quilitng background - gray Madeira Rayon No. 40
- quilt measures 127cm x 88cm

As with my first pictorial quilt 'Among the red flowers', I would like to thank the great artist and painter - Gracjana Zielinska for allowing me to use one of her graphics as an inspiration for this quilt

Dzisiaj zakonczyla sie moja gehenna z pikowaniem quiltu. Wczoraj spedzilam caly dzien pikujac tlo, dzisiaj dokonczylam niewielkie obszary, ktore zostaly bez pikowania.

Materialy, techniki, nici:
- malowanie na tkaninie (a raczej malowanie na aplikacji) - twarz, ramie i wlosy
- twarz i ramie to Kona cotton, wlosy i tlo - materialy z kolekcji Stonehenge
- kwiaty wyciete z najrozniejszych kwiatowych tkanin
- pikowanie twarzy, wlosow i kwiatow - niewidoczna nic Madeira Monofil No. 60
- pikowanie tla - szara Madeira Rayon No. 40
- wymiary: 127cm x 88cm

And now just photos :)

Sponsor's News and Giveaway winner

I'm late with posting the results of the last giveaway. I'm sorry for that. I've included all the comments which have been written under the giveaway untill today.

Spoznione wyniki rozdawajki juz sa. Za opoznienie najmocniej przepraszam. Ulinkap, gratuluje! Za chwile bede do ciebie pisac maila:

The book goes to:

Congratulations! I will contact you in a moment :)

And now it's time for some news. I've finished my 'art quilt' top, now I have to think how to quilt it and hopefully I'll start quilting this week. I have already most of the materials to start another quilt and plans for the third one :) I planned to send the second one to quilt show in France, but I forgot to look at the required quilt size for the contest. The second quilt will be square, approx. 1m x 1m and they want a very tall rectangle 75 x 150cm. So I decided, that I have to make another quilt for the sake of that quilt show :D

Yay, the treadmill was just comming. Heavy beast, but we managed with BF to  transport in inside (as we didn't order a team which would put it together inside our home, we had to transport it from the front of the house - inside on our own). Now the room is rearanged a bit to fit all the things around. Cats are a bit confused as we changed the position of their huge scratching post ('scratch castle' would be a better name) and I also need a bit of time to get used to the new order, but I'm so happy that the treadmill is finally there!

Sam the Squirrel PP pattern:
Some of you have asked me for my Sam the Squirrel PP pattern. I planned to redo it in EQ7, but didn't find the time for it. Tomorow I'll add the old version to the free patterns ('Tutorials and free patterns' tab on my blog) and when I will find a moment I will redo it in EQ7 (of course it will stay free).

Dreamcatcher pattern:
I've got also many questions about my Dreamcatcher wallhanging pattern. No, at the moment I don't have a ready pattern for it and in the first half of the year I will not prepare any but I promise I will add it to my long to-do list :)

Musze pomyslec. Materialy na kolejny quilt juz mam, plany trzeciego quiltu kielkuja w glowie :)
Dzis dosc meczacy dzien. Dotarla bieznia, musielismy przemeblowac pokoj, zeby sie wszystko zmiescilo no i jeszcze musze sie do nowego ukladu przyzwyczaic. Ale biega sie super :)
Do darmowych wzorow dolacze jutro Sama Wiewiorke. Mialam plany, zeby go przerobic w EQ7 i na planach sie niestety skonczylo, a kilka osob sie mnie juz o ten wzor pytalo.

Old Year, New Year and a Giveaway

I was away again. I spent some wonderful time in Poland with my family and now I 'm ready to face the challenges of the New Year :)

2013 was quite a succesful year to me (although less sewing-focused than the last one):

- from personal highlights  - I got back to work and I got engaged :)
- there were some new publications of my quilts and two more are planned for this year
- I held two workshops at Fat Quarterly Retreat in London with Julianna
- I got two wonderful sponsors - Robin's Patchwork and Craft Fabric
- I've sewn really many PP blocks this year... I guess 2013 was a PP year for me :)
- I started next pictorial quilt, which is very important for me as I planned to do it for a long time already

Plans/goals for 2014?

- definitely most part of the first half of the year will be focused on preparing the wedding
- finally I want to buy threadmill (I want to learn to run as an addition to my daily training but there's no way I will run outside in the winter)
- sewing plans - to finish one pictorial quilt, make another one till April and send them to quilt shows
- going to Prague to attend Prague Patchwork Meeting (to be decided in April)
- finishing Paper-ARRR! Piecing Adventures series
- I also have 2 or 3 quilt designs waiting to be made into real quilts... maybe in the second half of the year?
- enjoying life and being happy :) (that's quite a challenge as I'm usually grumpy ;)

Co planuje w 2014? Zdecydowanie wieksza czesc pierwszej polowy roku bedzie poswiecona przygotowaniom do wesela. Planuje tez zakup biezni, bo juz czas nauczyc sie biegac, a nie chce czekac az sie zrobi cieplo (trenuje regularnie ale wiecie, w razie apokalipsy zombi to daleko bym nie przebiegla... ;) czas to zmienic).

Now about the giveaway...

When I came back from Poland I found a package waiting for me with copies of Playful, Little Paper-Pieced Projects - a book compiled by Tascha Bruecher with many wonderful PP projects designed by people you for sure know from their blogs and websites. Mine is the snowflake which you can see on the cover:

Kilka slow o rozdawajce...

In my opinion it's one of the best book for modern quilters out there. Wide range of original and fresh projects, various difficulty levels, well designed... eye candy. It starts with 12 PP calendar blocks. In addition, each of calendar blocks was used in a small project:

Pierwsza czesc ksiazki to projekt quiltu-kalendarza z 12 blokami tematycznymi. Dodatkowo, bloki zostaly wykorzystane w malych projektach - torekach, poduszkach, etc.

I've made a snowflake block for January and a table runner using 3 snowflake blocks in different sizes:

Ja zaprojektowalam platek sniegu, ktory uzylam do uszycia zimowego bierznika:

There are some amazing PP projects in this section of the book, like the bicycle block (and a bicycle basket) by Julianna:

Moi faworyci to blok Julianny i jej koszyk rowerowy:

Or this beautiful chair cushion by Penny Layman:

I ta sliczna poduszka z blokiem zaprojektowanym przez Penny Layman:

Second section of the book is filled with small projects using PP paterns:

Druga czesc ksiazki to zbior malych projektow z wykorzystaniem wzorow PP (oczywiscie innych niz te 12 kalendarzowych blokow):

It's a must have book for quilters. And I'm not writing that because my project is in this book. I really, trully believe that this book is awesome and totally worth buying.

Giveaway:

And now you can win a copy of the Playful, Little Paper-Pieced Projects by writing a comment under this post. I'd love to read about your experience with PP. Did you already try it, or maybe it's on your to-do list in 2014?
I will randomly choose a winner on 12.01.

Rozdawajka:

WIPs in Winter

Christmas is slowly comming and last days I'm having a small break in 'modern' quilting. I'm trying to focus on two pictorial quilts which I want to make this Winter. The top of one quilt is almost finished - still have some painting to do, then putting all the pieces in the right place and quilting at the end. Few sneak peaks for you just to prove that I didn't stop sewing :)

There will be a lot of flowers on this quilt top (half of my sewing room's floor is taken by the quilt top and the flowers scattered around):

Swieta tuz tuz, ja tam juz prezenty dawno popakowalam i czekam na wyjazd do Polski. W szyciu 'normalnych quiltow' robie zimowa przerwe.

A small piece of the top - I still have to play a bit, change some flowers, remove them here and add somewhere else etc., untill the top will look like i want it to:

Tu kawalek ukladanki (oczywiscie do ostatecznej wersji jeszcze daleko):

With the help of my dearest BF I have a big and awesome lightbox. It makes (quilter's) life so much easier:

Chyba z rok temu zrobilismy u TZtem podswietlany 'stolik' (lightbox) wlasnie z mysla o pracy nad tym quiltem. Naczekal sie biedaczek ale zdal egzamin na 5+.

It's one of the older photos. I've already painted this part, but I've spent quite few days sitting, painting (no, not only that small piece there) and listening to music:

Zdjecie juz dosc wiekowe. Siedzac, malujac, sluchajac muzyki...

I'm already planning the next quilt and I wanted customly dyed piece of fabric for the background. When I was making 'Among the red flowers' quilt, I bought beautiful gradient dyed fabric from Beatrix @ handgefaerbtestoffe.de. This time (as I didn't find the exact fabric which I was looking for on her website) I contacted Beatrix and asked if she would dye a custom piece for me. First try was the top fabric. It's amazing, but that was not the exact colour which I was looking for. After few emails Beatrix decided to give it a second try with a different dye and it worked :D The left fabric, more green one will soon become a background for the quilt! If you are looking for beautiful handdyed fabrics, I can recommend Beatrix with all my heart!

No i juz zbieram materialy do pracy nad nastepnym quiltem.

DWR Wall Clock

I bet you've already heard about DWR Challenge organised by NYC Metro Mod Quiltguild. That was my first time sewing DQR block. I also designed a mini quilt with my interpretation of DWR but there is absolutely no way that I would manage to sew it before the deadline of the contest. I'll try to sew it one day, though.
I decided to sew something for the 'Small' category (single DWR circle). I used EZ Quilting/Simplicity templates to make it.

I had several ideas what to do with a single circle, but the best seemed the last one - a wall clock. Choosing fabrics was extremely hard. I wanted to hang the clock in my sewing room and first I wanted to make in only in beige/gray/black color combo, but that wasn't looking very good when I paired some fabrics together. Then I pulled the butterfly/moth fabric from Eclectic Elements and thought that it would be so cool to make a 'Shape Moth' wall clock :)
I placed the biggest butterfly in the center and added some beautiful, lime Curio fabric for the outside edges. This fits so nicely to the colours of my blog :)

Materialy wybieralam chyba ponad godzine. No nic mi nie pasowalo. Potem wyciagnelam z szafy material w motyle/cmy z kolekcji Eclectic Elements i tor myslenia poszedl w kierunku zegara 'Shape Moth' :) Do bezow i szarosci dodalam troche delikatnego zielonego a w samym centrum umiescilam najwiekszego motyla jaki byl na materiale:

Sewing curves wasn't a big deal. It just needed some pinning and everything fitted really nicely:

I wanted somehow to accent the hours on the clock and used little butterflies/moths from the fabric. I placed them on the outer, lime edge:

Godziny na zegarze zaakcentowalm malutkimi motylkami/cmami wycietymi z materialu:

Then backing and quilting. I didn't piece the arcs of the DWR as I wanted the simplicity and elegance. I also wanted to quilt them nicely:

Pobawilam sie troche z pikowaniem:

Then I cut the circle and added the grommet in the centre for the clock mechanism:

Abracadabra and the clock is almost ready :D I added the binding (cut wide, so it could cover the sides) and mounted the circle on a piece of a foam board:

Kolo obszylam szeroka lamowka. Na spod zegara dalam styropian, ktory zakrylam wlasnie lamowka:

The last part was to add the hands (with a small detail on the minute hand :)

I jeszcze maly akcencik na minutowej wskazowce:

I'm absolutely delighted with the result. I guess the result outgrew my expectations *so happy* :)

Zegar mi sie straszliwie podoba :) Jest wielki ale do pokoju szyciowego bedzie doskonale pasowal.
